Warmer Days Are Coming

Folks enjoy the sand and sun at the waterfront in North Bay.

North Bay, Ontario is a modest sized city of 50,000 souls, situated on the shores of Lake Nipissing.  Its past history as a rail hub has given way to newer functions including 4 season tourist center, north eastern Ontario education center with both a university and college, shopping mecca for the surrounding regional population and an airport capable of landing a Concorde jet.

Those of us who live in the great white north frequently turn our attention at this time of year to warmer summer days – which is the mood evoked by todays image.  The government dock provided a great location for this image.  Friends and families converge on the waterfront each summer to walk the garden paths, worship the sun, look out on the lake and dream, go swimming or all of the above.

There are several sandy beaches along the newly constructed waterfront where you can dig in the sand, build a sandcastle or bury your dad up to his armpits.  A large picnic shelter sits next door to the marina office and several children’s playgrounds are distributed along the length of the waterfront.  The original Chief Commanda now serves as a restaurant with outside decks where you can sit and watch the lake.

Fishing from the government dock is allowed and is a favorite pastime of both young and old.  Boat cruises of several hours duration can be booked on the Chief Commanda II. Other activities include the Heritage Railway mini train and the Heritage Carousel.  For more information click here.

Interior renovations to the former CP station are complete. This beautiful, historic landmark building now houses the former North Bay Area Museum, now know as @Discovery North Bay. Its exhibits and interactive displays will draw visitors downtown eager to learn about our community’s history.  For more on this attraction, click here.
